Hawaii’s MountainsHere’s a link to the live webcam on the summit of our tallest mountain Mauna Kea (~13,800 feet high) on the Big Island of Hawaii. Here’s the webcam for the (~10,023 feet high) Haleakala Crater on Maui (out of operation). These webcams are available during the daylight hours here in the islands, and at night whenever there’s a big moon shining down. Also, at night you will be able to see the stars, and the sunrise and sunset too…depending upon weather conditions.

Glenn’s Tuesday comments:  I’m at home here in upper Kula, Maui, Hawaii

505am, it’s mostly clear here in upper Kula with calm winds, and a low temperature at my place of 57 degrees…with the relative humidity 81%

 

>>> The warm tropical waters of the Earth’s oceans are very active with tropical cyclones now…and with areas that could become tropical cyclones! There is a high likelihood that we could see something coming our way later this week…more information on this possibility just below:

Central North Pacific: There are no active tropical cyclones

Invest 93C

Showers and thunderstorms remain disorganized in association with a broad area of low pressure located about 1100 miles east-southeast of the Hawaiian Islands that is nearly stationary. Environmental conditions are forecast to be conducive for further development, and a tropical depression or storm is expected to form during the next couple of days while the system begins moving generally northwestward across the Central Pacific. Interests in the Hawaiian Islands should closely monitor the progress of this system.

Looping Surface Precipitation…through the next 8-days

 

>>> Later this week, all eyes will be on the track of the tropical disturbance 93C. The National Hurricane Center continues to have this disturbance with a 90% chance of developing into a tropical cyclone at some point over the next 7-days. The track of 93C will be critical, and unfortunately the guidance in the past 24 hours have painted a near worst-case scenario for the islands.

The suite of hurricane models have come into rather impressive agreement, both on the track and the timing. The Hawaiian Islands remain right in the middle of the guidance suite as to where the center of the storm will track. A couple pieces of good news is the guidance has slowed the approach of the center of the storm, which now looks to arrive to around the Big Island on Saturday evening instead of Friday evening.

Secondly, the intensity guidance has not increased much, if at all, in the past 24 hours, with the middle of the intensity suite honing in on a strong tropical storm as the center moves across the islands. Thus, it appears likely that there will be impacts from this storm this weekend. The track of the storm as it moves through the islands will be the determining factor as to how significant the impacts will be.

The typical impacts from a nearby tropical cyclone can be expected…likely for all the islands. These include heavy rain causing flash flooding, gusty winds capable of causing damage to infrastructure, storm surge, and a low likelihood of tornadoes. Thus, it will be very prudent to keep an eye on the forecast in the coming days for the latest updates.

If 93C were to develop into a Tropical Storm or Hurricane, it would take on the name Lala

Hawaii’s Weather Highlights…as of Tuesday morning: Trade winds will continue through much of the week, with a high pressure system far to the northeast. A potential area for tropical development remains about 1100 miles east-southeast of the islands. Conditions remain favorable for tropical development, and we will need to continue to closely monitor how this could impact the islands.

Weather Narrative..as of Tuesday morning: Satellite and radar imagery shows some scattered windward and mountain showers moving in on the trades. Winds are expected to remain moderate to breezy for the next few days.

High pressure far to the northeast of the state will continue to bring trades to our area this week. Expect clouds and showers to be focused over the typical windward and mountain slopes in the trade wind flow. Additional clouds and showers are also expected over the Kona slopes of the Big Island during the afternoon and evening hours.

The main concern is related to the area of potential tropical development about 1100 miles east-southeast of the islands. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) continues to report that the area is conducive for additional tropical development over the next several days. As no system has yet developed, a lot of questions remain as to where any such system will form and move.

As such, the forecast for Hawaii could change significantly once any such system develops. Stay tuned for the latest updates on this developing tropical cyclone

Fire Weather: High pressure to the northeast of the state will maintain breezy trades. Fire weather conditions this week will remain just below critical thresholds due to the lack of stronger wind speeds. Minimum humidity levels will briefly reach criteria each day over the driest leeward areas and the lower sustained wind speeds will be the limiting factor. Temperature inversion heights range between 5,000 to 6,500 feet.

Marine Conditions…as of Tuesday morning: High pressure to the far northeast will slowly drift into position north of the Hawaiian Islands into the weekend, producing moderate to locally strong trade winds across the region. The Small Craft Advisory (SCA) has been extended through Wednesday afternoon for the windier waters and channels around Maui and the Big Island.

The weather pattern may change significantly this weekend as we continue to watch for a developing tropical cyclone currently in an area roughly 1,000 NM east-southeast of the Hawaiian Islands. Potential impacts are uncertain at this time, as the tropical cyclone has not yet formed and track guidance remains highly uncertain at this time. Marine interests should be prepared in case this system potentially turns towards the Hawaiian Islands after formation potentially as early as this weekend.

Surf along south and west facing shores will continue to remain elevated as overlapping south swells continue to impact the islands with some smaller wrap around energy along increasing surf heights along exposed west facing shores. A slightly bigger south swell will build in later today as another moderate, long period south swell arrives, peaking just below advisory thresholds by Wednesday, and then remaining elevated through Friday.

Surf along east facing shores will continue to remain moderate and rough due to continued trade winds. Later in the week, the track of a developing tropical cyclone will dictate the potential for a large swell exceeding advisory levels from the east to southeast direction. Surf along north facing shores will remain flat to tiny through the week.

Due to a combination of peak monthly high tides and water levels running higher than predicted in a few locations, a Coastal Flood Statement is in effect for minor coastal flooding around the afternoon high tide through Wednesday. Tides will be decreasing by the end of this week, but coastal flooding may continue to be possible around high tide for locations where water levels are running highest.

Central Tropical Atlantic:

Shower and thunderstorm activity is currently limited in association with an area of low pressure located about 500 miles southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands. Environmental conditions are forecast to become more conducive for development during the next couple of days, and a tropical depression will likely form during the latter half of this week while the system moves westward to west-northwestward across the central tropical Atlantic.

* Formation chance through 48 hours…low…30 percent
* Formation chance through 7 days…high…70 percent

 

East of the Windward Islands:

Disorganized showers and thunderstorms associated with a tropical wave are located about 600 miles east of the Windward Islands. The system is expected to encounter a large area of environmental dry air as it approaches the Windward Islands, and development is not expected. Locally heavy rains and gusty winds will be possible in the Lesser Antilles during the next couple of days as the disturbance moves through the area.

Central Subtropical Atlantic:

A trough of low pressure located several hundred miles northeast of Bermuda is producing showers and thunderstorms. Some development of this system is possible during the next day or so while it moves eastward at around 20 mph across the central subtropical Atlantic. The system is forecast to reach cooler waters later this week, ending its chances of formation by Thursday.

Heatwaves Also Hit the Ocean. Why?

Just like on land, the ocean environment can experience heatwaves. These periods of abnormally high ocean temperatures can last for weeks or even months, with potentially severe ecological and economic consequences.

Researchers from the Nicholas School of the Environment have identified a connection between marine heatwaves and moving bands of moisture in the air, called atmospheric rivers. Their study, funded by NASA, could potentially lead to improved predictions of marine heatwaves and a better understanding of how climate change factors in.

Atmospheric rivers spend ample time over oceans, where they can influence sea surface temperatures through various processes that move heat around. The researchers wanted to see if interactions between atmospheric rivers and the sea surface might play a role in marine heatwaves.
