Marine Winds – Here’s the latest (automatically updated) weather map showing a 1032 millibar high pressure system to the north-northeast of our islands. Our local trade winds will remain active through Tuesday…moderately strong.
Satellite and Radar Images: To view the cloud conditions we have here in Hawaii, please use the following satellite links, starting off with this Infrared Satellite Image of the islands to see all the clouds around during the day and night. This next image is one that gives close images of the islands only during the daytime hours, and is referred to as a Close-up visible image. Finally, here's a Looping IR satellite image, making viewable the clouds around the islands 24 hours a day. To help you keep track of where any showers may be around the islands, here’s the latest animated radar image.
Hawaii’s Mountains – Here’s a link to the live web cam on the summit of near 13,500 foot Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawaii. The tallest peak on the island of Maui is the Haleakala Crater, which is near 10,000 feet in elevation. These two web cams are available during the daylight hours here in the islands…and when there’s a big moon shining down during the night at times. Plus, during the nights you will be able to see stars, and the sunrise and sunset too…depending upon weather conditions.
Tropical Cyclone activity in the eastern and central Pacific – Here’s the latest weather information coming out of the National Hurricane Center, covering the eastern north Pacific. You can find the latest tropical cyclone information for the central north Pacific (where Hawaii is located) by clicking on this link to the Central Pacific Hurricane Center. A satellite image, which shows the entire ocean area between Hawaii and the Mexican coast…can be found here. Here's a tropical cyclone tracking map for the eastern and central Pacific.
Aloha Paragraphs

Summer trade wind weather pattern
continues…into the new week ahead
The trade winds will continue to blow…gradually easing up some into the new week. Glancing at this weather map, we find a large 1032 millibar high pressure system to the north-northeast of the islands Sunday night. This high pressure cell and its associated ridges will provide our trade winds over the islands well into the future. Our local winds however will ease up some now going into the new week. The small craft wind advisory has been now canceled across the entire state. As the high pressure system to our north begins to weaken a little more going into the new week, along with having an upper level low pressure system edge near us…our local winds will step down a little more in strength going forward.
Our trade winds will remain active…the following numbers represent the strongest gusts (mph), along with directions Sunday evening:
32 Port Allen, Kauai – E
23 Kahuku, Oahu – NE
25 Molokai – NE
18 Kahoolawe – NE
25 Kahului, Maui – NE
20 Lanai – NE
28 South Point, Big Island – NE
We can use the following links to see what’s going on in our area of the north central Pacific Ocean Sunday night. Looking at this NOAA satellite picture we find low level cumulus and stratocumulus clouds coming into our windward sides…although Oahu and Kauai were generally outside this particular cloud area. We can use this looping satellite image to see lower level clouds being carried along in the low level wind flow. There are some high clouds coming up towards us from the south and southwest of the islands too. Checking out this looping radar image we see clouds being carried along in the wind flow, which will provide a few showers to our windward sides…increasing some over Molokai, Maui, and the Big Island into Monday morning.
Sunset Commentary: The expectation continue for slightly lighter trade winds to blow going into the new work week ahead….although not dropping below the moderately strong levels. There still isn’t any sign of the trade winds faltering more than that, well into the future. We remain in the heart of our summer trade wind season.
As far as rainfall is concerned, there will continue to be some showers falling. These will be most generous along our windward coasts and slopes…and especially during the cool and moist night time hours. These showers will occur most noticeably on Molokai, Maui and the Big Island.
There’s a chance of some of the remnant moisture from former tropical cyclone Eugene, which was active way off to our east, being carried our way on the trade winds. If this tropical moisture was to arrive here, it wouldn't be until late in the new week…and would probably just blend into whatever showery clouds that were around then.
This last Friday evening after work I went to see a new film in Kahului. This one was called Crazy, Stupid, Love, starring Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone, Marisa Tomei, Kevin Bacon…among many others. Hello, how could this film be bad with all these major stars on board!? The synopsis: a hapless forty-something finds himself suddenly single when his seemingly "perfect" life unravels. I don't usually fall for comedy films, but this one looked pretty good, and a friend at work saw it and recommended it. I had dinner at Whole Foods before the film, and was sitting outside eating pizza and a salad, when two friends walked up. Interestingly enough, they had just seen this film, and they both liked it quite a lot. So this confirmed my desire, and had me looking forward to seeing it even more. As it turned out, I liked it very much, and could give it a good strong B+ grade. I found myself laughing lots, way more than I usually do, which is a good thing. It was funny, enough that I probably laughed out loud 10 or 15 times. Besides being funny though, it had heart and was touching in places too. So, if you feel like chuckling a bit, go so this film. Here's a trailer just in case you have an interest in getting a taste of what I saw.
~~~ Last evening I took to the steep drive up to Olinda for a big party, put on by some good friends of mine who were celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary. It turned out to be such fun, I very much enjoyed myself! There was a big tent outside, which was on an enormous property, with the most awesome view down the mountain. There was lots of great food, with an open bar, serving drinks, wine, champagne. Fortunately, I only had two glasses of red wine the entire night, so it was easy to drive back here to Kula. I ended up talking to lots of people, and greatly enjoyed the socializing aspect. There were several music groups playing, one of which had lots of folks out on the dance floor, one of which was of course me. I loved the evening, really lots of fun! Happy Anniversary Bob and Donna Hansen!
~~~ Here in Kula, Maui at around 5pm Sunday evening, skies were partly to mostly cloudy. It was a warm day, with a temperature of 71.6F degrees at the time of this writing. I had a good day of mostly relaxing, recharging my batteries for the new work week coming up. I lounged around and read, along with washing and hanging out my laundry. I didn't do much of my regular stuff, and didn't even walk today, at least not yet. Ok, I'll admit it, I was lazy today, and it felt so good. I didn't have to do any cooking, as this work week coming up, I'll simply heat up a tortilla, and add cheese, salsa, re-fried beans, avocado, and lettuce out of the garden for my dinners. I'm going to go out and wash my car now, or at least rinse it off. This evening after dinner I'll continue on this reading spree, and get to bed early enough to be ready to get up at 4:20am Monday morning as usual. I hope you had a great weekend wherever you happen to live, either here in the islands, or someplace further afield! I'll meet you here on Monday, when I'll have your next new weather narrative from paradise ready for the reading at around 530am HST. Aloha for now…Glenn.
